History

Founded by James Edward Oglethorpe in 1733, Georgia was the 13th and final American colony, with Savannah as its first city.  Savannah quickly developed in to a thriving seaport city with a carefully planned design of 24 squares.

Today Savannah is renowned for its beauty and hospitality.  Visitors flock to Savannah to enjoy outstanding restaurants, galleries, museums and shops, as well as the breath-taking beauty of the surrounding marshlands.  From historic River Street to Tybee Island, Savannah's charm has captivated young and old alike.

Geography

Savannah is situated at the mouth of the Savannah River, which forms the border between Georgia and South Carolina.  The city is precisely located at 31 degrees 4 minutes north latitude and 81 degrees 5 minutes west longitude.  The area has a large network of rivers and creeks, many of them under tidal influence.  The Intracoastal Waterway runs along the east coast, much of which is comprised of ecologically vital marshes.

Climate

Savannah enjoys a subtropical climate that makes outdoor activities possible year-round.  The summers are hot and the winters are mild.

On average, Savannah experiences four weeks where temperatures can approach freezing (32 degrees or below) and two months where temperatures are often in the 90s.
